Window of Tolerance: Understanding Your Nervous System’s Safe Zone

March 30, 2026 • by Kris • 10 min read

One of the most important concepts in nervous system regulation and trauma healing is the Window of Tolerance.

It explains why some days you feel completely overwhelmed and flooded with emotions, while other days you feel numb, disconnected, or shut down.

The Window of Tolerance is the zone where your nervous system can handle emotions, thoughts, and sensations without becoming too activated (hyper-aroused) or too collapsed (hypo-aroused).

What Happens Outside the Window?

Above the Window – Hyper-arousal

You may feel anxious, angry, panicky, restless, or have racing thoughts. Your heart beats fast, breathing is shallow, and it feels hard to calm down. This is the classic fight-or-flight response.

Below the Window – Hypo-arousal

You feel numb, exhausted, depressed, frozen, or disconnected from your body and emotions. It can feel like you’re moving through fog or watching life from behind a glass wall. This is the freeze or shutdown response.

How to Gently Return to Your Window

The goal is not to never leave the window — it’s to notice when you’ve left it and have kind, gentle tools to come back.
